LGV Licence Acquisition
and Hazard Perception & Theory Training
FDAT offer a complete course of instruction for anyone wishing to obtain their LGV Licence.
This qualification is made up of the following five individual tests:
- Licence Acquisition Multiple Choice Theory Test
- Licence Acquisition Hazard Perception Test
- Driver CPC Case Study Test
- Licence Acquisition Practical Driving Test
- Driver CPC Practical Demonstration Test
To apply for your LGV Licence:
- Obtain and complete Form D2 - remember to tick box C for provisional entitlement
- Obtain Form D4 Medical - visit your doctor for completion of this form

Module 1 - Theory Test:
- Module 1a: LGV Test - consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions
- Module 1b: Hazard Perception Test - consisting of 20 hazards to identify
Module 2 - Case Study Test:
- Consists of 8 case studies with 50 questions in total
Module 3 - Practical Driving Test:
Module 4 - Practical Demonstration Test
- Consists of 5 questions involving practical demonstrations
All our instructors hold the appropriate licence for the vehicle in which they are teaching. All have previous experience at a vocational level. By providing the correct training and instruction they will also endeavour to instil a high level of positive behaviours, ensuring that the driver adopts a professional approach in their chosen career.
Please note that if you are supplying the vehicle to be used for your candidate’s training, it must meet the minimum test vehicle criteria set out by the DSA which is as follows:
- A rigid goods vehicle with a MAM of a least 12 tonnes
- The vehicle must be a minimu of eight metres in length and a minimum of 2.4 metres in width
- The vehicle must be capable of 80 km/h (50 mph)
- The vehicle should have at least eight forward ratios
- The vehicle must have a closed box cargo compartment at least as wide and as high as the cab
- The vehicle must have a Tachograph (analogue or digital)
- The vehicle should also be fitted with ABS, seatbelts and examiner's mirrors
Hazard Perception & Theory Training
As well as LGV Licence Acquisition, FDAT also offers HPT for all vehicles, including cars. Training takes place on a one-to-one
basis for a computerised course to prepare you for your DSA HPT test.
We offer help with the Theory Test to pupils with learning difficulties in reading and writing. You should not see a learning difficulty as
a barrier to learning to drive.
