Properly Trained Drivers mean Safer Roads

Driver safety starts at the very top of any company. It doesn't matter who you are, whether the Managing Director of a large haulage operation, head of a sales company, the boss of a pizza delivery firm, or an estate agent, you're legally obliged to observe Health and Safety on the road.

If you or a member of your staff has a road accident whilst driving for your company and you haven't complied with current Occupational Road Risk legislation (ORR), you could be risking a hefty fine, or worse still a prison sentence (depending upon the seriousness of the accident).
As well as the ORR legislation, any failings upon your part will also fall within the remit of the Corporate Manslaughter Act, which came into force on 6 April 2008. Under this legislation, prosecutions will be of the corporate body and not individuals, but the liability of directors, board members or other individuals under health and safety law or general criminal law, will be unaffected. This means that the corporate body itself and individuals can still be prosecuted for separate health and safety offences. The Act also largely removes the Crown immunity that applies to the existing common law corporate manslaughter offence.

For anyone viewing Road Safety and driver training as yet another cost implication to their 'bottom line', don't. You are obliged under law to train your staff, whatever their role within your company and although there is a cost implication to all training, there are also many benefits to be had from doing so, not least:-

Road Safety is about getting it right, right from the start - there is no other way.
