UK Familiarisation Driver Course
The aim of this course is to introduce delegates to the Highway Code and driving on British roads so that they can navigate themselves safely and with confidence. By the end of this course delegates should:
- Have a good knowledge of the Highway Code and the laws, rules and regulations when driving on British roads
- Understand road signs and markings
- Understand how to react to signals at roundabouts and pedestrian crossings
- Be able to negotiate box junctions and crossings with traffic lights
- Have the ability to drive along motorways
- Have an improved knowledge of observations, spacing between vehicles and time to go through manoeuvres
- Be aware of the general defensive driving principles and techniques
This course is for anyone who has not driven on British roads, or feels they lack the confidence to drive on British roads due to their experience being limited to driving on foreign roads, which would apply to:
- Employees visiting the UK from abroad, or
- New residents to the UK who have been here for less than 12 months and still have a valid licence for their country of origin but are thinking of taking the UK driving test in the near future
New residents to the UK from a European Community or European Economic Area Country wishing to take a GB driving test will need to either:
- Apply for a GB counterpart licence (D58/2) by completing a D9 enclosing their community driving licence, or
- Exchange their community licence for the British equivalent and request the appropriate provisional entitlement
A provisional licence document (see 2 above) is issued free of charge. However, the appropriate fee must be paid and the community licence surrendered in exchange for a GB one when claiming the full entitlement. The relevant application form can be downloaded below.
Companies can benefit from the knowledge that their employees have been taught the basic principles of driving on British roads, putting them in a position whereby they are better able to avoid an accident. Reductions in accidents translate into insurance savings and less employee down time.
FDAT is also able to offer bespoke training for your individual company needs for British drivers using vehicles in Europe.
